Types of pipe fittings and purposes:
- Elbows: To adjust the angle or direction of the pipe run, use this tool. Turns of 90 degrees and 45 degrees are the most prevalent. The fitting’s sweep specifies how quickly a transition or change in direction occurs.
- Street Elbows: The pipe fitting has male threads on one end and female threads on the other. These are ubiquitous in copper and galvanised steel pipe. They’re useful because they eliminate the need for a nipple and work well in cramped spaces.
- Tee Fittings: Allows for branch lines and is shaped like the letter T.
- Couplings: Used to join two straight pieces of pipe of the same diameter.
- Reducers: Used to join pipes of different diameters. Makes a gradual change in diameter.
